Abstract

The high adoption of e-wallets among Generation Z does not correspond to the quality of their personal financial management. This study analyzes the effect of lifestyle and digital promotion on personal financial management, with self-control as a mediating variable, among Generation Z e-wallet users in DKI Jakarta. A quantitative approach with a causal-descriptive design was employed. Data were collected through an online five-point Likert questionnaire from 189 active Generation Z undergraduate students who use e-wallets (GoPay, OVO, Dana, ShopeePay, LinkAja) in DKI Jakarta, selected through purposive sampling, and analyzed using Structural Equation Modeling–Partial Least Squares (SEM-PLS) with SmartPLS 4.0. The results show that lifestyle has a significant positive effect on self-control, while digital promotion has a significant negative effect on self-control. Lifestyle and digital promotion do not have a significant direct effect on personal financial management, whereas self-control has a significant and strongly dominant positive effect on personal financial management. Mediation testing confirms that self-control fully mediates the effect of both lifestyle and digital promotion on personal financial management. These findings emphasize that self-regulatory capacity, rather than lifestyle or promotional exposure alone, is the key determinant of personal financial management quality among Generation Z e-wallet users.
